New York, New York

The Vietnam Veterans Plaza, located at 55 Water Street, is New York City’s only official memorial to those who served in Vietnam.  ETM was retained by the property owners to develop a new site design that united the existing memorial and plaza, while providing an attractive, more usable public space to the thousands of tourists, office workers, and commuters who visit or use the plaza daily.

ETM worked closely with the New York chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Committee to create this inviting public space for visitors, while providing an impressive and dignified tribute to the veterans of the Vietnam War.  The plaza features a newly-designed Walk of Honor, where the names of the 1,741 New Yorkers who gave their lives in Vietnam are listed.  Interspersed with plantings and night lighting, the Walk of Honor serves as a striking tribute to those young men and women who served and died in Vietnam.  The etched stainless steel panels have proven to be a perfect surface for rubbings taken by friends and family members visiting the Memorial.

A large stainless steel map of South Vietnam, located at the entrance to the Walk of Honor, depicts significant historical locations providing a geographical perspective to the understanding of the war.  The Plaza is now an important historical and educational destination for veterans, students, families, and tourists.
